Overview

FURWARE peek is an user-friendly and versatile camera tool. It offers a few modes:

As an alternative to using the elegant HUD, you can also operate peek almost completely using keyboard shortcuts with the included gestures - even when the HUD is hidden.

Features

About version 3

In peek 3, some big and many small changes and improvements have been made. Many of them were inspired by peek users - thank you very much for the constructive feedback and great patience while testing the many beta versions. :)

As a consequence of the various changes this version of peek (cameras, sharing,...) is not compatible with earlier versions. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

For a detailed overview of the changes, please see the section Version history.

Video tutorials and demos

Because pictures say more than a thousand words (especially for such a product) I recommend to take a look at these demos on YouTube:

Basics Shows how to attach and individually adjust the main HUD.
Presets Shows the usage of presets (storing camera positions without in-world objects).
Cameras Shows the usage of the camera objects included with peek.
Sharing Demonstrates how to share your view, presets and cameras with other avatars.

Tips, tricks and notes

This section lists diverse topics around the usage of peek and camera controls in Second Life and might eventually be extended in the future. If you're missing an important topic or if you have questions, feel free to contact me (Ochi Wolfe).

Advanced menu, disable camera constraints

Please see this Tip Of The Week by Torley Linden.

Chat commands of the main HUD

Some peek functionality is only available via chat commands. With /42 help while wearing the HUD you receive an overview of available commands (42 is the default channel on which peek listens - you can change this channel using a chat command as well).

Chat commands of the camera objects

The peek camera objects also understand some chat commands. They're listening on channel 876 (which can't be changed at the moment). The format of a camera command takes the form

/876 Target:Command:Parameter

Keyboard shortcuts for important functions

Some gestures are delivered with peek which offer quick access to functions like control on/off, next/previous preset, etc. You can also create your own gestures which for example emit commands like /42 switchtonumber 1, /42 switchtonumber 2, etc. to immediately access presets or cameras with a certain number in the list.

Avoiding flickering avatars/objects

Quick camera position changes in a scene with many avatars or complex objects may lead to short flickering avatars or prims. The situation can possibly be improved by disabling the option "Advanced" -> "Rendering" -> "Object-Object Occlusion" (Ctrl+Shift+O) while using peek (but please don't forget to re-enable it afterwards as having this option disabled may lead to decreased performance).

Cameras won't rez!

The most common reason for this the lack of permissions on the land where you want to place the camera. It's possible that related problems are not immediately obvious. Please also check the following points:

Cameras don't listen to me!

Chat commands only have (like normal chat) a range of 20 meters. You can shout commands up to 100 meters by pressing Ctrl+Return to send the command message. Please also make sure that the camera resides on a parcel where scripts are allowed.

Gesture commands are executed multiple times!

Please check if you have multiple identical gestures on the same keys active. The simplest method to do so is to use the "Active Gestures" window ("Edit" -> "Gestures..." or Ctrl+G).

The view reacts unexpectedly when selecting objects

This is a known issue of the Second Life client, see this JIRA entry.

Thank you!

First of all, thanks to Ookami Hudson who modeled the camera objects of version 2.1 in sculpty form for version 3 in no time.

And of course big thanks to CodeWarrior Carling, LaPiscean Liberty, Lex Congrejo, Ray0 Raymaker, Rosco Teardrop and all other dear customers who helped me with constructive feedback and big patience with testing the many beta versions. :)
